Tattoo Aftercare Instructions Proper aftercare is crucial for ensuring your tattoo heals well and looks its best. Please follow these instructions carefully to minimize the risk of infection and promote optimal healing. Traditional Aftercare When you get home: 1. Remove the bandage within 3-4 hours after getting your tattoo. Do not re-bandage, as your tattoo needs to breathe. 2. Wash your tattoo gently with an anti-bacterial liquid soap, using only your hands. Do not use a washcloth or anything abrasive. 3. Pat your tattoo dry with a paper towel or let it air dry. Do not rub or use a rough fabric. 4. Apply a small amount of ointment to your tattoo. 5. If instructed to leave the bandage on until the following morning, remove it as directed and clean your tattoo. For the next 3-4 days: 1. Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion to your tattoo 2-3 times daily, or as needed. Use Aquaphor sparingly, if at all. Avoid Vaseline, petroleum, Neosporin, and Bag Balm. 2. Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo, and do not double-dip into the moisturizer. 3. Ensure the lotion is fully absorbed and not greasy. 4. On the first night, you may wrap your tattoo in saran wrap to prevent sticking to bedding. Do not use cloth bandages or pads. 5. Wear clean, soft, non-abrasive clothing over your tattoo for the first 2 weeks. For foot tattoos, go barefoot when possible or follow special instructions for wearing shoes. 6. After day 3 or 4, your tattoo will likely begin to peel. This is normal; do not pick at the skin. 7. Continue washing and moisturizing for the full 2 weeks. Derm Shield Aftercare Derm Shield is a breathable, waterproof bandage that promotes gentle healing and reduces the risk of scabbing and scarring. When you leave the shop, your tattoo will be protected with Derm Shield, and you'll receive an extra sheet for later use. Notify your artist if you have an adhesive allergy, as Derm Shield may not be suitable for you. 1. If fluid gathers under the bandage during the first 24 hours, this is normal. If there is a lot of fluid, remove the Derm Shield and begin standard aftercare. 2. After 3-4 days, remove the Derm Shield under warm running water. Pull the bandage back over itself slowly and gently to avoid skin damage. 3. Clean your tattoo with anti-bacterial liquid soap, using only your hands. Pat dry with a paper towel or air dry. 4. Apply a small amount of ointment to your tattoo. 5. Follow the traditional aftercare instructions for the next 3-4 days. Things to Avoid * Picking, scratching, peeling, slapping, rubbing, or irritating your tattoo * Soaking your tattoo (no swimming, baths, or hot tubs) for 2 weeks * Exposing your tattoo to the sun for 2-3 weeks; use sunblock after that period * Wearing abrasive materials, jewelry, or shoes that rub against your tattoo * Allowing others to touch your tattoo * Using gym equipment without thoroughly cleaning it first Common Concerns If you experience severe adverse reactions, seek medical attention immediately. While we are trained in tattooing, we are not medical professionals. Q: My tattoo is swollen and painful after my appointment; is this normal? A: Please keep in mind that tattooing is technically a medical procedure. It is normal for your tattoo to be swollen, red, and painful to the touch in the days following your tattoo. You may ice your tattoo and begin taking ibuprofen immediately following your tattoo. If swelling and pain persist after 3-4 days and are accompanied by white spots, fever, or pus-filled blisters, please seek medical attention immediately. Q: I am noticing small red bumps or small pimples on or near my new tattoo; is this normal? A: You may notice small bumps or small pimples on or near your tattoo in the week following your procedure. Typically, this is due to the use of ointment, which can clog your pores. If you notice a red, bumpy, itchy rash that does not go away, you may need to speak to your physician. It is not uncommon for this type of reaction to occur because of the use of ointments. Q: My tattoo still feels raised weeks later; is this normal? A: Your tattoo may remain raised for weeks or months following your tattoo. Causes for this range from your specific body chemistry to the weather. Often, the only solution is to wait it out. The skin surrounding your tattoo remaining raised can be a sign of an allergic reaction to the ink itself. Allergies to tattoo ink are extremely rare; however, they do happen. They can happen immediately or years later. Typically, reactions occur due to colored ink, most commonly red. If you believe you are having an allergic reaction to the ink, you should consult your physician or seek medical attention. Q: My tattoo looks scarred; is this normal? A: If you generally heal poorly from cuts and grazes or suffer from certain medical conditions, you may not heal as well as required, and some scarring may appear within the tattoo as a result. Some people scar more than others, and no technique will modify this risk. If you are prone to keloids or excessive scar formation, avoid getting a tattoo in an area of tension where it will be repeatedly stretched, as this will increase the risk of scarring. Remember, if you have any concerns or questions about your tattoo's healing process, don't hesitate to contact us or consult a medical professional.
